Taylor Strange

Barren County High School Early College Magnet 2025 Senior

General Colin Powell, 65th United States Secretary of State once said "There is no secret to success. It is the result of preparation, hard work, and learning from failure." This quote has stuck with me all throughout my time as a student, and will forever live on in my future career. I have always been a student who has never let excuses or failures stop me from being great. I want to use my strengths to guide me to success, and there is no better way to do this than grinding each and everyday and putting in 110% effort. If all else fails, I know my determination and hard work will persevere over everything else.

SkillsUSA Kentucky

SkillsUSA is a national non-profit organization in which students of vocational and CTE pathways compete and learn valuable skills such as personal skills, professional skills, and technical skills grounded in academics. These skills aid in the development of students all around the nation, making them well rounded individuals. SkillsUSA aims to close the “skills gap”, formally known as the disparity between the skills an employer expects their employees to have, and the actual skills employees possess. My school has implemented this club and uses it to the students benifit. This club has been a major part of my high school career. Starting my freshman year, I selected engineering as my pathway and wanted to focus on architectural design. I was highly invested in the clubs that were associated with this, that's when I joined Barren County ATC’s SkillsUSA. My sophomore year, I would find myself becoming my chapter's secretary. I work hard each and everyday at this club and want to grow the opprotunities that students can take with SkillsUSA. I would continue this leadership role all throughout the rest of my high school years. While obtaining this leadership position at my school, I decided to step out of my comfort zone and run for a Kentucky State SkillsUSA office. This was very new to me considering this was my first ever leadership position. I was elected by SkillsUSA members from the state of Kentucky as President for Kentucky SkillsUSA during my senior year. My time in such a prestigious leadership position has taught me to be comfortable with networking and public speaking. This organization has expanded my experiences and provided me with so many amazing opprotunities. In September 2024, I was chosen out of my state officer group to represent Kentucky at the Washington Leadership Training Institute, in Washington, DC. This is where SkillsUSA members advocate for CTE funding to national legislators. I used my professional, leadership, and communication skills to advocate to Congressman James Comer and Brett Guthrie about the importance of funding CTE programs all over the state of Kentucky. Without the help of SkillsUSA, I would have not stepped out of my comfort zone and tested my limits. SkillsUSA has been a major part of the dedication to expanding my experiences and boundaries, the progress I have made as a senior at Barren County High School is a reflection of hard work and ambition I have learnt through this particular organization.

Engineering Pathway

During my time at Barren County High School, I have decided to take the engineering pathway. This pathway has opened me up to Architectural Design. Since my sophomore year, I have stuck with this pathway and have completed 9 classes, all passing with an A. I have completed many projects including: 10 full set digital and paper copy house blueprints, Habitat for Humanity Chapter house blueprints, competed and placed first for SkillsUSA in Architectural Design regional and state, and created 3D models of houses. I work very hard on my house projects and have been a very valuable student within my pathway. Architecture is my passion and I have worked really hard on every single project I have faced in this pathway. While I have trained myself to become very good at architecture, I have also invested so much time into advocating for my CTE programs like CAD. Computer-aided design has allowed me to freely explore my creative mind and apply it to real world applications. While being apart of the CAD department at the Barren County ATC, I have been able to join SkillsUSA where I have competed in architectural design. My junior year, I won state and competed nationally. I placed 33rd out of 50, while just being a junior. My senior year I competed for architectural design and have so far won first in region and will advance onto state. I want other students and community members to see the benefits of Barren County's ATC and how programs like mine have shaped my passions and interest.

Lifeguarding

I have been a lifeguard for three years. I have had three different lifeguard jobs over each summer, including: Glasgow City Pool (2022), Barren County YMCA (2023), and Jellystone State Park- Cave City (2024). I have completed and passed 2 different lifeguard courses along with CPR & AED training courses. Being a lifeguard has trained me to stay alert and cautious when considering the safety of patrons. This skill can be very beneficial to my everyday life. I have grown to be more alert of my surroundings, and trained to act quickly in emergency situations. Being CPR & AED certified is a valuable life skill that I have obtained. I am prepared to assist people in a medical emergency. This is very vital. While working as a lifeguard I have experienced how to communicate and work with a variety of people. We have random training sessions where I have learn to communicate thoroughly even during stressful situations. The safety of other people are in my hands while performing my job, this is why I have gained the trait of being alert, active, and ready to assist in any situation that may happen. Lifeguarding is a very important job to me and has set me up for success in my future endeavors. I have spent many years being a lifeguard and I enjoy communicating to patrons and assuring them that I will keep safety at the top of my priority.

Varsity Basketball

All throughout my life ever since I was a little girl, I have played basketball. Basketball has been a huge part of my life and I have dedicated lots of my time to this sport. In 6th grade I started playing basketball for Barren County Middle School, this is when I also started playing AAU travel basketball. I joined a team out of Southern Kentucky called the STARZ, this is where I started taking private lessons and improving my basketball skills. When I started 8th grade, I was moved up to the junior varsity team at Barren County High School. Unfortunately, Covid ended our season early and I did not get most of my freshman season. Sophomore year I started JV and eventually played varsity basketball. My junior year I started varsity and was a very good contributor to my team. I played my very last varsity game at the beginning of senior summer ball. I was so upset I had to quit because of the state office I was going into. Basketball has always been a big part of my life and my time at Barren County High School. While I didn't play my senior year, I have contributed so much time and dedication to this sport and have traveled all over the country with my AAU basketball team. Barren County girls basketball is very successful and I am so happy I was able to be their biggest cheerleader during my senior year.
